Kai Enkata

"It’s far easier to kill than it is to save; but that is why we must strive to always help those in need."

STORY

Kai Enkata was born as "Kali" within the outer confines of Dalmasca, living in a smaller forest unlike the Golmore Jungle, in which most Viera reside. Though his family and village were small, they retained many of the traditions of their ancestry; as such, it was not long until Kali’s youth became embroiled in intense training that taught him how to live and fight on his own, separate from any safety a home could provide him. Though difficult, Kali took this training in stride, showing great promise in becoming a Wood-Warder-- though this path was not to be. While Kali showed incredible potential in his training, he was also fiercely curious about the neighboring Dalmascans, and would often sneak away to observe and interact with them. For his entire early youth, he went out of his way to learn of and from the people outside of his village, a powerful craving for knowledge of the outside world driving him. Once he learned fully how to fend for himself, he abandoned his home and left to explore the world on his own, changing his name to Kai to fit in a bit more with the outside world. Now on his own, Kai traveled the breadth of Dalmasca, a wandering warrior and scholar who delved into whatever new knowledge he could get his hands on. He would continue to travel around the various countries and domains for years, spending much time further east in the Azim Steppe, a location that he enjoys visiting even now. While traveling through Hingashi, he learned the techniques of the Doman Ninjas, adapting it to his own combat style; the highly dextrous mix of blade and magic suiting his tastes quite well. Over the years, Kai took on odd jobs and guard work, acting as a courier, a scout, a bodyguard, or many other jobs that suited his capabilities. Eventually, though, Kai would leave Hingashi as well, and travel further west still to the continent of Eorzea. There, he joined the adventurer’s guild, taking on proper commissions and quests for others to gain himself some money and fame. Much like his work eastward, he took to this vocation in stride, easily making his way through the various dungeons and quests assigned to him. Eventually, like many others, his efforts caught the eye of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, as they recruited him to their cause to help quell the pains of the world. With them, he continued his advance skyward, always improving his own abilities and never failing a mission. It didn’t matter what it was; rescuing captives from pirates, liberating crystals from a beast tribe preparing to summon a primal, or even outright assassination of dangerous garlean foes. He worked in the shadows, always cleaning up any mess left behind by the others and opening up important pathways forward for those more suited to the limelight. After some time, however, Kai began to notice a contradiction in his life. Though he always excelled at what he did, he never noticed any real change being made. He followed in the footsteps of the Scions’ esteemed Warrior of Light, taking out the things they couldn’t be bothered with and saving those who they couldn’t reach. But for each incredible foe they toppled, each Garlean general they defeated, there were hundreds more that died. People they failed to save, or people caught in the crossfire of their heroic conquest. What they were doing was for the better of the world, to be sure, but was there no solace for those left behind? What could be done for those that the hero couldn’t reach? The longer Kai fought, the more jaded he grew to the concept. Every person he killed, what was the point? Every person he failed to save, the various people who he nor the rest of the scions would ever know, who would be there for them? Kai decided he had had enough. Storing away his blades, he officially retired from the scions and his adventuring life and took once again to his studies of arcanima. Alone, he trained himself in the ways of various supportive and protective disciplines, traveling the world once again and learning from various practitioners, all the way from the twelveswood, to the ruins of the civilization of Nym, and even across the sea to the grand country of Sharlayan. Kai knew that he could not possibly save everyone, but he wanted to do what he could to save as many people as possible. Once he felt he was sufficiently experienced in his new path, he retired to being a wandering helper, healing and protecting those who needed his assistance. Nowadays, he runs a small clinic in Hingashi, providing aid to the locals when he isn't traveling.

PERSONALITY

Kai is a calm and somewhat tired man, though he is occasionally playful with those he is familiar with. He’s quite kind to others and does his best to be of help. He does seem to have an issue of becoming bored or lonely easily, and as such prefers to spend time around groups even if he doesn’t have any particular reason to be out. In combat, he has a versatile skill set, though he heavily prefers avoiding hurting others nowadays, and tends to focus on protecting and healing. In truth, Kai enjoys training and fighting, but doesn’t enjoy fighting others as much as he used to; he’s grown somewhat jaded to his old ways, and lives by the mantra of “It’s far easier to kill than it is to save; but that is why we must strive to always help those in need.”

Miscellaneous Info

  • Is covered in scars. However, he actually feels shame in them; he sees each scar of a time he could have done better. He does, however, also recognize that he is still alive despite these scars, and they are also a measure of his resolve. Nevertheless, he typically keeps one covered up, with his hair.

  • Has a tattoo on the left side of his face that marks him as one of his old family. Though he has long since abandoned his old life, he keeps the tattoo uncovered as a sign of respect for his upbringing.

  • His favorite color is Dark Aquamarine.

  • Looks a lot younger than he is. Viera live a very long time, so while he has been alive for more than forty summers, mentally and physically he is comparably in his early to mid 20's.

  • Keeps a doll on his work desk that he received from a little girl he saved once.

  • When he trains, Kai uses real weapons he has in storage. When in the field, however, he creates whatever weapon he might need out of condensed aether, similar to the techniques of the Red Mages. This allows him to easily pass through places without arousing suspicion by carrying a weapon.

  • When he's not traveling, Kai makes a habit of visiting bars and party venues. He's not particularly interested in the scene itself, but he likes people watching.

  • Somewhat poor eyesight. Without his glasses, he lacks some depth perception and things become blurry; but he's still extremely perceptive and can rely just on the movements of colors to see "properly."

  • Surprisingly, has very little trust for others. Though he's kind and helps others often, he has had his own share of troubles with people he considered friends or other close connections in the past. He tends to keep an emotional distance from anyone nowadays to avoid any trouble.

  • His attention can easily be gained, or even exploited in some cases, with the promise of learning. He is fiercely curious about new things, and loves to find out about new magic, technology, or even people.

  • Though he typically sticks to healing, Kai has learned various disciplines and incorporates techniques from them into his fighting, including Ninjutsu from the Doman Ninjas, Aether Condensing from Red Magic, barrier magic from the Astrologians, and the technique of the high jump (and other physical feats) from the Dragoons of Ishgard. He's a quick learner, and can pick up most disciplines given enough time and practice.
